SYSA will need 30 referees for the 2010 outdoor season

Referee training sessions will be held in  April to prepare new and returning referees

Pre Game Preparation


Referees must arrive 25 minutes prior to the game scheduled start time
It is the referee’s responsibility to start the the game on time.
Come prepared.  You should be wearing your referee jersey, shorts and socks and black runners.

 

Take the following items to each game

 -  your rulebook 

- Refing wallet with game card, yellow and red cards 
-  runners

-  whistle

-  watch or stopwatch

-  linesman flags

-  pad & pen or pencil

Sweat pants and rain jacket (* or large black plastic garbage bag will work)
-  coin*

 

*HINT: if you forget or lose your coin, you can pick up a stone, place it in one hand, and have the away team's captain guess which hand the stone is in.

How to become a Soccer Referee

 

Step 1 - Contact SYSA Referee-in-Chief

Step 2 - Attend a 1 hour orientation meeting on Wednesday Feb 17 at 7:00pm at the Stonewall Collegiate. Meet with senior refs, ask questions and begin the process of becoming a referee.

 

Step 3 – Sign up for a Referee Clinic - SYSA will cover the cost of the Clinic

Step 4 – Attend the Referee Clinic - The Clinic will be held on a weekend

Step 5 - After attending the Referee Clinic -You will receive a Referee kit/equipment, which includes the following:

Referee uniform - Shirt and shorts

-Whistle and lanyard

-Hand pump

-Linesmen Flags (2 flags)

-Referee wallet with yellow and red card

SYSA will provide all of the above equipment. All Equipment must be return at the end of the season. If a referee misplaces their equipment it will be up to the Referee to replace the equipment.

Refs will be required to purchase a black pair of referee socks to complete their referee kits 
Pumps will be issued to all second year referees 

Training Period -

New Referees will be required to referee 1 - Age 9 -12 league (3/4 Field) games with a senior referee.

You will also be required to referee 1 - Age 13 - 17  (Large Field) game with a senior ref. You will then qualify as a SYSA youth referee and receive a MSA crest indicating you have met all requirements. Please note that while training all new referees will receive $15/game.
